Merry Christmas

Since I've got soo much on my plate the next few days...Merry Christmas!  I should have more doodles over the next week as I'm off from work for quite a while.

Cannons

Holiday!

I was asked to make a nicer looking listing of our offices hours during the holiday.  So I spiffed up the typed out list I was emailed and came up with this.  Everyone at the office loved it (of course, most of us including myself will be off starting Christmas Eve and returning the 2nd):

Pencil step 2

Pencil with shading, it kinda works.

Pencil graphic

sometimes I have to do simple drawings...icons...whatever for work.  Here's a pencil. It's goin to be part of another ad, once I add all the shadows and stuff.  But what you see above is made only from vector shapes.

sadman gif banner

Oh boy!  I get to animate sad man as I've dubbed him just now.  Nothing fancy, but they need a banner....I have him blinking.  I don't even know if I can upload a gif here....  I didn't check the timing, so it's not smooth at all.  But I like that he's blinking.  His eye's bug me...need to fix them tommorrow....oh soo picky.

Random post

1. I'm working on some doodles that I want to refine a bit more before posting.

They'll hopefully be done sometime this weekend. I have so many ideas in my head and I'm trying to keep up and put them on paper and capture what it is I'm seeing. lol

2. For the first time ever I am a vice-chairman of the board.

Fancy schmancy title, right? I'm a boardmember for the 75th McDonald's Thanksgiving Day Parade here in Chicago. If you guys know anyone that can volunteer their Thanksgiving morning - you get some nice freebies and you'll be on TV, and you're done around 11am.

Check out and volunteer at:

http://www.chicagofestivals.org/

3. Im a fan of John Carter of Mars.

I share a birthday with its author, who also wrote Tarzan right here in Tree Studios in Chicago. I'm kinda exicted but kinda nervous about Pixar doing the upcoming feature- but they're good at getting the story right, so I shouldn't worry, right?

SCI-FI Wire reports that Andrew Stanton, the director of Pixar’s upcoming feature John Carter of Mars, with co-writer Mark Andrews will be putting their own spin on the iconic story. The site also shares that, according to a Pixar manager, the film will have a unique look as well. Jim Morris, general manager at Pixar Animation, adds, “John Carter is in its very early stages, and there is much to figure out about that, so we’d be premature. We are looking at a variety of different approaches and techniques for that…We’re kind of a bit early in the development of that.”

4. Chicagoanimators.com 2008 Comic-Con interviews:

I'll hopefully get working on editing and uploading the next ones. I got great ones from Chris Sanders, Ronnie Del Carmen, Adam Huges, and one of my favorite interviews: Craig McCraken! I kinda have them on Catherine's computer and she's been busy doing freelance work on said computer and I don't want to infringe on her time. So I'll post quite a few once I get my hands on that computer!! muah haa haa!!!

5. Theatre season is upon me!!

I've got a lot of work to do on the sets and some props for "The King and I". This is pretty much the first time I'm not also involved in acting in the show. I thought it would free up my time nicely. Turns out it just means people think I have more time to work on more things. I'm a workaholic, not a problem as long as its creative. Who needs sleep!Like on my way outta town tonight I get to pick up 7 48" dowels plus ribbons and snowflakes from the director.

6. Halloween!

It's one of my favorite holidays, mostly because everyone I know dresses up and has fun. I make my costume every year (as I did as a kid). Last year I was Old-School Wonder Woman, and I think it did a decent job. This year, do to the freebie wings I got at Comic-Con, I'm going to be tinkerbell. I'm opting to make a costume closer to the original style of the actual Disney movie. None of that silly frilly crud. I just got the lime-green fabric online today.

daily vampire

lol wierd title, should explain this is the daily topic for one of the blogs I post at. I'm ok with this drawing, not loving it, but we can be friends. lol.
I set up a portfolio website (finally). Still doesn't have everything that's decent to put up there, and none of my animation (go figure!) but at least I started it. That's the first step...but calling it that makes me feel like im in some AA group.

Couldn't sleep

The thing about doing a regular 9-5 job is that i get all these ideas and no time to do them in. Unless I don't sleep. So I do fun stuff after work like drawing, practicing guitar, cooking. Tonight I really couldn't sleep though. My mind is running all over the place. Sketching helps. Not happy with this one, but i'm leaving it alone.

Poof

When I thought "POOF" I thought about a mermaid retelling her encounter with a sailor as in "Poof and then he was gone!" And i like drawing mermaids. This is a rare fancytail mermaid, tails are a bit different and very colorful and flowy hence the fancytail name. They live off the coast of Catalina Island where they can easily blend into the seaweed. This one was obviously caught off gaurd.

goodbye engineer of imagination

No drawing could do justice to the note i have to place here, but yet I want to mark it in my own journal.

Today I learned that Ollie Johnston, last of the 9 has left this earth to join his comrades wherever it is tired animators go once they expire. Frank and Ollie were really fantastic inspirations and like all animators I enjoyed every little wink that was thrown into their direction in movies. To loose Ollie is like loosing the last page on a windy day, to a story that now is closed.

I wonder where the future will lead to- I'm hoping that their footprints will burn into the foundations of animation instead of fading into the sea of history. May their legends live on and inspire these and upcoming generations, so that inventive and lovable characters are created and the great tradition of animation lives on to inspire imagination.

The Red Ballon

I watched "The Red Ballon" the other night and it was fantastic. Just as wonderful as I remembered from my childhood viewing. What I hadn't remembered at all was the blue ballon. There was so much character in this movie, and rarely a word spoken. Quite the masterpiece. With the Red Ballon the dvd had White Mane, which was interesting but not as good. It did have some beautiful imagery.

The art of mary blair

Loved the book but felt jipped that there weren't more pictures. It's kinda like a highschool essy with lots of quotes, some bits of history, and a few photos. I know there's lots more. I want a book more like the Charley Harper book that I've heard about. Hopefully not that expensive, but an actual CATALOG of Mary Blair's work would be nice. Guess that would require a museum to show it though. Hmph. Maybe the Getty will do it, she is such an influential artist and I want to see more damn it!

Red Umbrella

It was a grey rainy day on the way to rehearsal tonight.

archery

I did this one completely in photoshop, used some free stock photos, (the arrow feathers and the actual target). I had trouble with the text and using the pen tool, plus the need to have really long titles on the actual image as the client requested.

Double Exposure

Today I didn't feel like singing in choir so I skipped and did some artwork.

I didn't feel like drawing at all so I took out my old digital camera.

Notes on Double Exposure:
I wanted to caputure my feelings and the thoughts in my head. I worked the photos minimally on the computer, working with exposure and intensity, as well as adding grain and textures to reflect the feelings going through me.
