Zoo Sketch

My friends Catherine, Sarah, and Adrian came into the city and I got out of my office job early to go draw with them at the zoo. It was a fun day, lots of the animals actually seemed to be posing for us. And because it was a weekday, the crowds weren't soo heavy. Here are my drawings from our mini sketchcrawl in no particular order:

Rome and Montecassino

I just got back from Italy where I had VERY little time to draw (sadly). Sigh, someday I'd like to go there and have time to draw. Anyway.
Here are three drawings, one done in the car while waiting, one done on a sidestreet while waiting, and finally, one done quickly in a garden while waiting. All really short waits. I don't like the last one. Wish I had time to make the first one more defined, and the middle one- well, there's a definite wish to have had more time really.

I'm pretty new to logo designing, but I just was informed that the design I created for Women In Film's Focus Awards has been choosen for this year's awards! :)

Last time my friend Morgan had a birthday I made a nice old-lookin animation of an elephant for her. The pic at the left is a test animation. Now I must say I sculpted the elephant quite quickly, so no armature, and it's very small, about the size of a mouse, and the texture comes from the charcoal that I used to make the background. Eventually I'll post the actual short, but seeing as my home internet isn't working, and I've just got a week before my european vacation, I'll just post what I do have.

Well, you had to be there to understand. But these are the latest from my figure drawing Thursday. I need to go to more, but the ones at my college ended for the season. Guess I'll be traveling to somewhere else to improve my figure drawing. These are the best three I think from that day.

May has past alreadY???

Seems time has been passing for me quite quickly lately...my grandfather died right before my fathers birthday and it seems that I've been away every day of may or trapped standing on traincars an buses this month. It's been tiring. There have been a few breaths of fresh air...including 1. the Kalamazoo animation festival-where I was in a character drawing/design workshop with my dad and 2. the John and Bill show- where I got to meet bill plympton and john K. who did ren and stimpy. 3. I got to hang out with the rest of the WIA chicago peeps. We held our own sketch crawl

So here's a few sketches I've scrounged up for now (there are others on random scraps of paper that have yet to be scanned, once I'm willing to judge weather it's worth it to post em')

1. This is from a birthday party my friend had at a bar. I was encouraged to stop painting shortly after I had done some warm ups. Here's the warm ups:

Now on to the mini sketch crawl WIA chicago did during our meeting that happened at the same time as the John & Bill show....we landed up at Limbo pizza and then later traveled to Baskin/Dunkin where I had to leave. The pizza place was especially great cause we got to watch some classic Batman tv...a episode with hippies. Maybe someday i'll tell the batman stories I have... anyway. here's my sketches:

And finally, I took a bikeride to the lakefront (the bestest lakefront in the world) and sketched some. I'm still fighting with water colors, never having the patience with them. I love oil paint, it's got richer color and is more forgiving. Water color seems to intimidate me of all people...I'm still not happy with the color quality - i'm ignoring the paper warping...
























And I happed to luck out and have a mounted police officer go right by me with this gorgeous horse. Short short time to draw, but the sketch caught the general idea...though I needed to darken the image so you could see the pencil strokes I have on my paper...























Hoping to scan stuff tommorrow....I have another birthday at a bar...hence many people to draw!

In an effort to draw more, I took out some pastels and some of my stuff and unrolled the brown wrap paper and drew on it. This is actually pretty large, almost the width of the paper roll.


and then I did this for one which will be going to an undisclosed personage. (man I miss the muppets!):

The Art of Presentation

I know this is a drawing blog. But this article does apply to any artistic medium. I learned about it at another blog and I feel it should be posted. It's about putting a famous musician- and makin him play on the street as if he were a street performer, a social test to see how the commuters would react. It's quite interesting:

So I'm taking that pirate joke to a finished level. Started with the bartender...

Knife Throwing Target board

Here's each panel from the knife throwing board I painted for the last musical I was in. I took lines from the play and painted them on each side, sorta quickly and more tattooey like cause I figured Hines worked in the state fair raquet so he'd have had the tattoo guy for the bearded lady do the box. Only that guy's soo busy that he knocked it up quite quickly, but still tried to make it look snazzy. So I painted exactly what they mentioned in the bit before hines throws his knives at the balloons (which are gone in these pics, though there are a few reminanats on the floor in one photo). Each of these panels are about 6 feet tall so it was quite a challenge to stick to the quick doodles I skeched on the backside of the script, but it pretty much looks exactly how I envisioned it. So all the lines are pulled from the play, except I added the "Iron-nerved Iowan" bit, which probably SHOULD have been said cause how can you NOT say Iron-nerved Iowan in a knife throwing build-up???! Anyway here's the pics:

I also carved foam for the first time in my life. I had to make 4 sewing machines. I used a hot wire and man did the stuff smell!! But anyway, here's one of the foam sewing machines

A Pirate walks into a bar....

There's this bad pirate joke that my office manager likes to tell. And like any bad joke, it gets told over and over again.

Anyway, at lunch I doodled a quick sketch of it into a birthday card for my friend, and I wrote the joke into said birthday card which in all fairness had an equally bad pirate joke in it already.... but anyway, here's a bad scan of the bad pirate joke without the bad joke written in...

I built a pirate ship!

Ok, so I was just ONE person out of a group of carpenters and stuff, but here's a photo of a pirate ship I helped build for a film set at my old college:

the excuse of No time

I feel as if I'm slacking off a bit with my doodle page. I'm making something to put in tonight. See I wrote it here and now it'll be in my head all day at work while I'm doing mind-numbing stuff. So now that it's written down somewhere I HAVE to make a point to draw something.

I've recently been reading a book about Michelangelo, who I've always admired, and so I pulled out one of my Vatican books and attempted to sketch the delphic sybil. My pencil was down to the stub so I used my ballpoint pen.

I had some stuff lying around so I scanned an arrangement and played with the scan. This is what came out and will become my avatar.

I know this is my skechblog but....

I went on a businesstrip to Oakland with my co-worker last week...and my office manager humored me and took me for a sidetrip to Emeryville (I tempted her with IKEA, the shopping mall, and Kinko's Email Access) where she took my picture infront of Pixar.

So for this business trip I stayed in a room on the 18th floor with an eastern view of the mountains. So I woke up at about 6am each day and drank my coffee while watching the sunrise over the mountains. It was quite nice. I only made one drawing while sitting on my bed using my crayon box, and here it is:



















I have many more doodles to ad, but I'm headed to see the cool art at the DvA gallery show tonight.

back again

I've just come back from Oakland, CA where I was handing out stuff at the bar exam. Then I got to roam around the city of San Francisco and be the biggest goofy tourist that I could be (alcatraz. trolley bell ringing, seeing the bay bridge, taking photos and all that).

So haven't been home to update my doodleblog. But I have been drawing! Here's a sketch I did based on my walk back from rehearsal last week in the snow (one's the original sketch, the other's a digital paint job)







































more will follow, but I have no food in my fridge and I guess I have to go grocery shopping. lol
